Gabbi
Breast Cancer Awareness App
I was hired for freelance work to design the onboarding process of an amazing new app that promoted breast cancer awareness. Gabbi takes in many lifestyle and genetic factors to alert users to signs that could indicate that they were at risk and connect them with the right healthcare providers for their next steps. This required an extensive onboarding process with many steps, ending in a risk assessment, next steps, and what to talk to your doctor about.

Current State
The first prototype that I was able to view had been done by another designer, earlier on in the project’s life, so I had analyze this prototype and speak with the stakeholders to get the current state of the design and understand their project aims fully.
After reviewing the current design, I aimed to:
Streamline the onboarding process.
Encourage users to complete this process by providing visual cues of progress and encouraging messaging.

Onboarding Competitor Analysis
I knew that Gabbi had a very lengthy onboarding process, so I sought out mobile apps with extensive onboarding flows.
Prose Haircare - Custom Haircare Products
Care/Of - Personalized Vitamin Packs
Fastly - Weight Loss Progress Tracker
I documented all of these app’s onboarding processes, screen by screen, and broke these flows down into detailed diagrams that mapped progress, user inputs, incentives to keep going, and other features of note.
User Flows
The Gabbi app required an extensive onboarding process and it was crucial that users completed this process in order to fully use the app and its features.
The majority of new mobile app users get through the onboarding or only part of it before closing the app and never using it again. It is essential to communicate the value of the app through a smooth, easy onboarding that coaches the user through the process.
Prototyping
I always begin prototyping with sketches.
The act of putting pencil to paper is the fastest and most natural way for me to get ideas out of my head and into wireframes.
Handoff & Next Steps
After my third iteration, this was handed off to an internal designer within Helpfully Inc. to finish the app when I moved into a new role.
I was able to provide feedback on the following designs and see it emerge into a fully-functional product that partners with health systems and providers to promote risk awareness and improve patients’ well-being overall.
This was a very rewarding project to work on and I love to see that Gabbi is doing so well today.
